The Rams reportedly wanted Brock Bowers, but were just as happy with Jared Verse

The Los Angeles Rams made a first round pick for the first time since 2016 and though Jared Verse is considered by some to be a top edge rusher in the draft, NFL Network’s Peter Schrager shared that the Rams were also interested in trading up for Georgia tight end Brock Bowers.

Schrager gives some insight about the Rams reportedly trying to make some calls, and them being excited about the idea that Bowers could fall to them.

“There was some calls through out the draft…the player that they had their eyes on if he had slipped a little bit was Brock Bowers.”

Schrager also throws some shade at himself because he did at one point guarantee that Sean McVay would be taking an offensive player with his first ever first round pick as a NFL head coach, however the Rams went defense. To Schrager’s credit, it does sound like he knew what he was talking about, but for as much predicting as we do for the NFL Draft it can ultimately be unpredictable. The Atlanta Falcons picking Michael Penix Jr. may have been the most surprising selection of the initial round.

For the Rams their picking of Verse isn’t shocking and it makes sense that the team would want to bolster their defense and especially their pass rush. Schrager does say that the Rams are very happy with their selection. However, it is interesting that LA was looking at Bowers. Fans may have been thrilled with that pick had it happened.

The results end up being the results. Reports like this always seem to come out after the draft, and teams should have more than a few players they want at a particular spot because there isn’t a way of knowing what is going to happen on draft day until it happens. Perhaps LA would’ve liked Bowers, but the price for trading up may have been too high or maybe the teams in front of them (like the Las Vegas Raiders who ended up taking Bowers) were never going to let the talented tight end fall to the Rams.

The results are the results. Bowers goes to Las Vegas, and Verse is welcomed to LA.
