Wednesday saw a bombshell coming out of the Pacific Northwest. Pete Carroll, the winningest head coach in Seattle Seahawks history, is out after 14 seasons at the job.

Carroll will remain with the organization in an advisor role, but no longer serve as the its’s head coach.

“After thoughtful meetings and careful consideration for the best interest of the franchise, we have amicably agreed with Pete Carroll that his role will evolve from Head Coach to remain with the organization as an advisor,” Seahawks chair Jody Allen said in a statement.

“Pete is the winningest coach in Seahawks history, brought the city its first Super Bowl title, and created a tremendous impact over the past 14 years on the field and in the community. His expertise in leadership and building a championship culture will continue as an integral part of our organization moving forward. Pete will always be a beloved member of the Seahawks family.”

A former head coach of the New England Patriots and at USC, Carroll arrived in Seattle in 2010. Over the next 14 seasons, he led the club to 10 postseason berths as well as five division titles.

He also helped the Seahawks win their only Super Bowl to date, capping their 2013 campaign with a 43-8 beatdown of the Denver Broncos. They had a chance to become the first back-to-back champions in a decade the following season, but were denied a second title by Carroll’s ex-club, the Patriots.

Nonetheless, Carroll’s time as Seahawks head coach was a highly successful one. Now, the team will be looking for a successor.

In total, seven coaching positions are now currently unoccupied. Besides the Seattle gig, the Tennessee Titans, Washington Commanders, Atlanta Falcons, Las Vegas Raiders, Carolina Panthers, and Los Angeles Chargers are also looking for new head coaches.
