NFL Draft Results: Eagles pick Johnny Wilson at No. 185

The Eagles have another new wide receiver!

With the 185th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select … Johnny Wilson, wide receiver, Florida State!

Wilson, who turned 23 earlier this month, is a big man (still shorter than me, for the record)! He’s listed at 6’6⅜”, 231 pounds with a 99 percentile arm length and wingspan. That’s much bigger than 5’10” Ainias Smith, who the Eagles drafted earlier on Day 3.

Wilson figures to compete for snaps as a player who can offer some big play/jump ball ability. Ideally, he could see some occasional targets as a complementary piece to the likes of volume targets A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

If things don’t work out at receiver, perhaps he’ll be considered as a tight end convert.

An enormous target with an elite catch radius, Wilson is still in the process of learning to play to his traits. He is fairly physical against press but plodding feet limit his release quickness and ability to separate out of breaks. He flashes impressive catches here and there but generally fails to impose his frame and strength on defenders, leading to a disappointing contested-catch rate for such a big man. In general, Wilson’s body control and ball skills might not be good enough to stick at wide receiver. He could end up trying to make a team as an F tight end with enough developmental traits to warrant an extended look.
