Xiyu Wang defeated wildcard Brenda Fruhvirtova in the first round of the Miami Open on Monday. Wang won 6-0, 7-5 in 91 minutes against the 15-year-old.
In the first set, Wang won 83% of her first-serve points and 67% of her second-serve points. She also won all nine points played on the Czech’s second serve. The Chinese player converted three of four break points across the set while facing none of her own. In the second set, Wang’s first-serve points won remained high at 81% but where Fruhvirtova was able to improve the margin of points she won off her second serves to 75%, Wang’s second-serve points won dropped to 31%. Both players exchanged a break of serve each before Wang was able to break her opponent for the second time in the match to score the win.
In the second round, Wang will take on 29th seed Petra Martic.

Meanwhile, Fruhvirtova’s elder sister, Linda also crashed out in the first round. Canadian qualifier Katherine Sebov took out the 17-year-old 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in their clash. Sebov will play third seed Jessica Pegula in the second round.
Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu dispatched off Filipino teenager and wildcard entrant, Alexandra Eala in their round-of-128 meeting. Begu needed an hour and 51 minutes and had to stave off five set points in the second set to come through 6-2, 7-5.
Begu failed to save all four break points she faced but converted seven break points on her 17-year-old opponent’s serve. She finished the match with 76 points to Eala’s 56. Next up for Begu will be the 23rd-seeded Qinwen Zheng of China.
Lastly, former Miami Open champion Camila Giorgi took her place in the round-of-64 with a 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 7-6(4) win over Kaia Kanepi. The match lasted three hours and 37 minutes. Giorgi will play 14th seed Victoria Azarenka for a chance to reach the third round.
