Dead Island 2 was one of the most monumental releases in 2023. It was in development for a whopping ten years before it finally dropped in April 2023, bringing an open-world, zombie-slashing adventure to fans the world over. It’s an energetic and gory zombie game with arcade elements and more humour than you’d expect from a game set in such dire circumstances. Recently, an all-new expansion was released for Dead Island 2: SoLA.
In SoLA, players are thrust into a festival environment in Los Angeles, the game’s core setting. In an all-new trailer released to celebrate the launch of SoLA, we get a look at a masterfully crafted environment that looks phenomenal at first blush. There are more destructive ways to slaughter zombies than ever before, and for hte launch of SoLA, Dambuster Studios has created brand-new undead variants that are intensely innovative – and somewhat disgusting.

In SoLA, players are charged with tackling a zombie uprising in a less-than-typical setting: a music festival. There’s an immersive mini-story at the heart of the expansion and various side tasks to resolve. As the second expansion in Dead Island 2’s lifecycle, SoLA seems more open and freer than the first, which was named Haus and was mostly linear. For those playing SoLA, Dambuster has created two new zombie variants that are nothing short of chilling: the Whipper and the Clotter.
Be warned: they’re not for squeamish players. The Whipper uses its intestines as a vicious whip, and the Clotter is capable of decomposing into a pile of bloody mush and rebuilding itself in the blink of an eye. I warned you! There’s a reason why Dead Island 2 is one of the best post-apocalyptic games ever released.
Dambuster spoke at length about these new zombie types, stressing that the team wanted to be as creative as possible in making something never seen before:
‘The starting point was always the mechanics of the two new archetypes. They both offer completely new behaviors never seen before in the Dead Island enemy roster. It’s tough, but we love the challenge. We like creating things for the game that you won’t have ever seen before.’
SoLA leans into Dead Island 2’s ‘F.L.E.S.H.’ Engine more than ever, offering inventive new ways to take chunks out of the undead hordes in the game.
