Severity of Emma Raducanu’s lower-back injury revealed after late Miami withdrawal

on

Emma Raducanu’s representatives have revealed that the Briton’s back injury is “nothing serious,” according to British media.

Raducanu, who made her Miami debut in 2022, was scheduled to make her third Miami appearance this year after the tournament organizers gave her a main draw wildcard. When the draw was released over the weekend, the 2021 US Open champion received a favorable first-round matchup, drawing Wang Xiyu.

But on Monday – the eve of her opening match in Miami – Raducanu pulled out of the tournament citing a lower-back injury. Following Raducanu’s withdrawal, Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova made the main draw as a lucky loser.

For Raducanu, this was the first time since she started her post-surgery comeback in the first week of 2024 that she was forced to withdraw from a tournament. While Raducanu skipping Miami isn’t great, it is certainly encouraging to hear from her team that a serious injury was avoided.

When we could see Raducanu back in action?

Now that Raducanu is out of Miami, the next time she plays will certainly be on clay courts.

Last week, British Billie Jean King Cup team captain Anne Keothavong named Raducanu for the upcoming qualifiers tie against France. The tie is set to take place between April 12-13 and it will be taking place in France on clay courts.

If Raducanu plays during the BJK Cup qualifiers weekend, it would be her first appearance in the competition in exactly two years.

“I’m delighted to be traveling with a full-strength team off the back of some terrific results recently,” Keothavong said in a statement last week.

“The French side will present a significant challenge as always, but we all know how representing GB inspires us and each year we are getting stronger and better as a team.”

After the BJK Cup qualifiers, Raducanu has a WTA 500 clay tournament in Stuttgart, which kicks off on April 15th.
