World ranking, more changes for the OWGR

on

The World Ranking has experienced a series of transformations over the course of 2023, creating a cauldron of uncertainty and controversy. Recognized as the reference ranking in the world of professional golf, the OWGR system has suffered the consequences of the war between the Tours, forcing LIV Golf players to suffer the consequences of the ban inflicted by the rest of the circuits. The reliability of the classification system has been questioned by many parties, increasing bitterness between fans and the specialized press.

However, as the end of the year and the start of the new Tours season approaches, OWGR has decided to take a step forward.

Golf, ranking

In an official press release published on the institutional website, the organization announced two changes to the scoring system, effective January 1, 2024.

The first change concerns the score assigned to tournaments with a limited field, i.e. less than 80 players at the start, which do not include the cut.

Participants who place themselves in top positions during tournaments of this type will receive a greater amount of points, to the detriment of those who find themselves at the bottom of the ranking. Players who are part of the last 15% of participants, i.e. those who exit in the first round in the case of a match play formula, will not receive any points.

The PGA Tour’s Signature Events, which are the centerpiece of the 2024 season and were designed to counteract the LIV effect, are the primary recipient of this change.

The second change concerns the introduction of rewards for players who will be able to win more tournaments over 52 weeks. Anyone who wins at least two tournaments will receive a 60% bonus on the points obtained, while participants who manage to achieve three or more victories will receive a 70% bonus. However, it should be noted that the bonuses will have a maximum limit, so the beneficiaries will not be able to earn more than four points.

To concretely see the effects of these changes, it will be necessary to wait for their implementation. In any case, the main objective of these interventions is to ensure greater competitiveness during tournaments and fair remuneration for players.
