Another change in the front office this offseason for the 49ers.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler tweeted that the San Francisco 49ers “promoted national scout Josh Williams to director of scouting and football operations. Williams will work closely with General Manager John Lynch and EVP of Football Operations Paraag Marathe. Williams has been part of the NFL’s accelerator program and is considered a future general manager candidate.”

Williams has been with the 49ers organization for 12 seasons. Prior to serving as a national scout, he was an area scout from 2017 through 2021. Williams held multiple titles, including a pro personnel scout and an assistant in the scouting department. He’s from Santa Rosa, so this has to be a dream job for Williams.

If Fowler is correct that Williams has a future as general manager, the 49ers would add to their history under Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch’s tree of front-office candidates who were minorities.

This seems like the next step for Williams, who will likely work in tandem or closely with Tariq Ahmad and RJ Gillen, both of whom were recently promoted.
