Realm Apex Legends Series May Be Shutting Down

Apex Legends has a diverse roster of tournaments, with the official ALGS being the main event. There’s plenty more out there though. Most recently, the Realm Apex Legends tournaments has been a bit of a different take on the normal format. A prominent rumour at the weekend has suggested that might be coming to an end because of problems with a crypto currency investor, so is the Realm Apex Legends tournament series abruptly ending and why?

What is the Realm Apex Legends Tournament?

The Realm Apex Legends tournament series was a new type of tournament, offering major prize pools in an alternative route for pro Apex players than the ALGS. With problems like server lag in the ALGS occurring pretty frequently lately, it was an attractive prospect. The tournament series ran in a pretty unique way.

It operated as a separate system, with players competing as Solos on a leaderboard even in a team-based game. Once players met some sizable entry requirements, they were able to enter into the Realms tournament and start competing. They can play games with their individual performance in each round contributing to their overall score. The individuals who reached the highest spots on the maps would get cash prizes. Each region has a $150,000 prize pool, so there’s substantial rewards here.

The Realm Apex Legends tournament did offer an alternative to the standard format. However, they required players to reach a decent rank in most regions, and generally be a known player with a history in pro level Apex.

Most recently, the tournament has had a lot of controversy over an apparent closure.

Is It Cancelled?

The Realm Apex Legends tournament series started up in April. Over the weekend though, some in the community began leaking private messages that pointed towards cancellation.

The screenshots claim that SoloQ will be cancelled immediately, with TeamQ not launching as planned either. The rumour circulating was that the project was financed by cryptocurrency investors, which had run into problems.

Some supposedly leaked Discord messages had a different explanation, pointing to a lack of pro-level players getting involved.

Apex Legends content creators were all seemingly onboard with the crypto investors reasoning for the cancellation, although they also specified that those actually working on organising the tournament worked hard.

Realm was a lot of fun but I don’t think anyone can be surprised that the crypto/nft based startup hosting Apex tournaments didn’t make enough money to keep going.

Realm’s organizers have instead insisted there’s other reasons behind the changes, calling the entire rumour fake. They tweeted that “This decision has nothing to do with “Crypto”.” The hosts of the Apex After Hours discussion podcast did invite Realm on their show to explain what the organizers have dubbed “fake news fallout”. No one from Realm was free to come on though.

At the moment, it looks like the Realm Apex Legends tournament series is either shutting down or getting significant changes. This was an experiment in a different type of tournament. At the moment, it’s unclear just what the reasons behind the changes are.
