Opsreay to challenge for AEW International title at Double or Nothing

After AEW International champion Roderick Strong put down a challenge from his old friend Kyle O’Reilly at Dynasty on Sun., April 21, he needed a new challenger. To determine who that would be, a Casino Gauntlet match was booked for the April 24 Dynamite.

A Casino Gauntlet match is a staggered entry affair a la WWE’s Royal Rumble. The key difference is instead of the winner being the last person standing after everyone else has been eliminated, here it’s the first wrestler to score a pinfall or submission — and that can happen at any point in the match regardless of how many competitors have entered the match.

Tonight in Jacksonville, Florida’s Daily’s Place, we started with Switchblade Jay White and Dante Martin. They were joined by Penta El Zero Miedo, followed by O’Reilly sporting a fresh haircut and looking for another shot at Roddy.

Business really picked up after that with the entry of one of AEW’s hottest stars, Will Ospreay. That led to a moment between two former IWGP World champions in their new promotion:

Next was another man with New Japan ties, Lance Archer. The Murderhawk Monster set up some tables, but of course he ended up going through them himself courtesy of the just entered Komander.

Jay Lethal was next in as Archer wasn’t the only entrant laid out around the ring. But just as the announcers were telling us we could get up to 21 men in the match, it was Ospreay and KOR in the ring. Will set-up for Tiger Driver ‘91, but after what happened in his match with Bryan Danielson on PPV, he hesitated.

Komander flew in with a springboard 450 on Kool Kyle, which created an opening for Ospreay to hit the luchador with Hidden Blade and end the match with a pin. That brought out Roddy and the rest of Undisputed Kingdom, and we learned that match will take place at Double or Nothing on Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas.

A segment later, Don Callis interrupted Renee Paquette’s interview with the Aerial Assassin to chastise him for not using the Tiger Driver… intrigue!
