Thomas has been RB coach for Saints since 2015

The New York Giants are interviewing New Orleans Saints running backs coach Joel Thomas for the same position on their staff, per a report from Ian Rapoport.

The move would appear to be a lateral one for Thomas, who has been the Saints’ running backs coach since 2015. As such, the Saints could have denied the Giants permission to speak with Thomas but are allowing the interview. It’s not known if the Giants might be considering Thomas for more than just running backs coach.

Thomas has worked in New Orleans for both Sean Payton and current coach Dennis Allen.

Thomas began his coaching career in 2022. He coached at Purdue, Louisville, Idaho, Washington and Arkansas before moving to the NFL with the Saints.

Thomas, 49, played collegiately at Idaho.

The Giants have an opening for a running backs coach because Jeff Nixon, who held the role in 2023, took a job as offensive coordinator at Syracuse University.
