WCG’s lead draft analyst breaks down the Bears’ new quarterback.
With the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears have selected USC quarterback Caleb Williams.
The selection hardly comes as a surprise, as Williams being the No. 1 pick for the Bears was the general expectation around the league ever since Chicago secured the top spot through the Panthers. Once the Bears traded last year’s starting quarterback Justin Fields to the Steelers in March, any potential doubt was removed.
The 2022 Heisman Trophy winner was a three-year starter at the collegiate level, starring for Oklahoma as a freshman and excelling at USC for his final two seasons. Touted for his impressive arm strength, his accuracy, his creativity out of structure, and his athleticism, many have placed Williams in the same tier of quarterback prospects as the likes of Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow and Andrew Luck.
In preparation for the selection, I went through and watched every game Williams played in college. After the Bears made the pick, I tweeted out a thread of my crash course takeaways from what he brings to the table.
THREAD: #Bears QB Caleb Williams has the potential to become a bonafide quarterback in the NFL.

Caleb has some of the best arm talent of any QB that I’ve scouted in college.
His elasticity and velocity behind his throws open up opportunities for passes that most QBs aren’t physically capable of hitting. #Bears pic.twitter.com/04WhSBKSOa

The creativity with Caleb is off the charts.
He has tremendous field vision and has the arm talent needed to make throws to any part of the field. #Bears pic.twitter.com/zJPkMwz2vh

Caleb is a naturally accurate thrower of the football with a strong sense of touch down the field.
He knows how to hit his targets in stride and how to deliver dimes into soft spots of zone coverage. #Bears pic.twitter.com/CouLZQUw1u

The narrative of “Caleb has no pocket presence” simply isn’t true.
He’s shown some seriously impressive flashes of pocket maneuverability and a strong internal clock to get the ball out quickly. #Bears pic.twitter.com/O3Cxx4IG5R

Fans of Justin Fields loved his dual-threat ability, but you’ll get plenty of that with Caleb, too.
He’s an agile runner with very good breakaway speed, and his ball-carrier vision allows him to make plays with his legs. #Bears pic.twitter.com/TRZFexFw3J

Overall, Caleb Williams has the arm talent, creativity, accuracy, athleticism and mindset needed to become a star in the NFL.
Whether or not he will, we’ll see. But the #Bears just took the best QB prospect they’ve drafted in franchise history.
