Escape from Tarkov Dev Fails to Calm ‘Unheard Edition’ Drama

on

Recently, Escape from Tarkov was in the press for all the wrong reasons. Battlestate Games, the game’s developer, released a new version of the game called The Unheard Edition. This edition was immediately labelled as ‘pay-to-win’ boasting many features that should have been included in previous versions of the game. It’s a staggering bundle but it comes with a $250 price tag, and everything Battlestate Games has done since has only just added fuel to the fire.

Most recently, the head of the studio at Battlestate Games, Nikita Buyanov, took to social media to try and alleviate the situation. Following the reveal of another edition and some tweaks to The Unheard Edition, the sentiment around Escape from Tarkov was still seriously negative – and remains to be so.

That’s Not Calming Them Down

Nikita Buyanov took to Reddit to explain the situation with The Unheard Edition and Escaped, the latest version of Escape from Tarkov. One of the biggest points of contention is players labelling this as ‘DLC’, which was promised to be included with the purchase of the Edge of Darkness edition, which has since been taken off the market. However, while Edge of Darkness players have been offered a sizeable discount on The Unheard Edition, the crux of the issue is that they ‘should have had’ this content already.

To that, Buyanov said:

‘First of all, PvE gamemode this is not DLC. DLC in our understanding is the major additions to the game … This specific functionality of the PvE mode is necessarily located entirely on a separate network infrastructure, because, essentially, you play on our servers, only in closed mode. At this stage, it is not possible to launch all players who are EoD holders – right now we simply do not have the required amount of resources for this.’

The ‘player-vs-environment’ mode essentially allows users to experience Tarkov from a single-player perspective, keeping everything in the game but removing the player-vs-player threat. That’s what has been ‘locked behind’ this paywall.

Buyanov continued:

‘We observe your dissatisfaction and have decided that the functionality of the PvE mode will be available for free to all owners of the EoD version at the release of the game … So that any player of any version of the EFT can have the opportunity to test the PvE mode, we want to add the ability to purchase a separate early access to this mode.’

It’s not enough to placate the masses, though. Fans are enraged at this latest round of changes, and even discounts aren’t enough to calm them. It’s an unforgettable moment in Escape from Tarkov’s history, and with rampant competition on the horizon, it could be a nail in the coffin for the game.
