Thursday Cheese Curds: Young Packers’ offense looks to continue 2023 breakout

Bolstered with a new weapon in the backfield and some new faces on the line, Green Bay’s offense is looking to keep the trend line pointing upward.

The Green Bay Packers had one of the most surprising second-half performances in all of football last season. Jordan Love’s breakout — and that of the rest of the team’s impressively young offense — buoyed the team to a playoff berth, a playoff win, and nearly to a spot in the NFC Championship Game.

The Packers’ defense saw more major changes, of course. A new coordinator, several new assistant coaches, and three day-two draft picks will surely change the look and feel on that side of the football. But the offense needs to keep up the development that it showed late last season as the team relied on its young receiving corps and quarterback to win games.

That youth and continuity should serve this team well moving towards the 2024 season. The team returns the equivalent of 9 of 11 starters, with players who departed during the offseason accounting for exactly 34 starts in 2023 (Jon Runyan 17, Aaron Jones 11, Josiah Deguara 4, Yosh Nijman 1, David Bakhtiari 1).

Let’s look at some storylines about the offense heading into the coming season.

Just about every other member of the Packers’ offensive line is set up to play multiple positions, but Myers is a center only, so earning the starting job there is his only real pathway to playing time.

While Myers is aiming to retain his job at center, Morgan is hoping to be in the starting lineup anywhere so he has the opportunity to protect his new teammate.
