3 post-draft moves the Dallas Cowboys should make to complete their roster

The Cowboys still have some work to do to fill out their roster.

The 2024 NFL Draft may be over, but that doesn’t mean the Dallas Cowboys don’t still have work to do. They have a few holes to fill on the roster and will look towards free agency and possibly the trade market to address those concerns.

Today, we are going to take a look at three post-draft moves the Cowboys should consider making to help complete the roster for the upcoming 2024 season. Each one of these moves could potentially be tremendous upgrades if they come to fruition.

2 free agents to sign

CB Stephon Gilmore

Trevon Diggs’ return from his season-ending injury is a concern, one that running it back with Stephon Gilmore would eliminate. Adding him back to the mix with Diggs, DaRon Bland, Jourdan Lewis, and rookie Caelen Carson would give the Cowboys five versatile CBs to make their secondary scary good this year.

DT Calais Campbell

At 37 years old, Calais Campbell is no longer the player he once was, but still has enough gas in the tank to help the Cowboys defensive front. Dallas is still painfully thin along the interior of their DL and Campbell’s addition would help tremendously. He’s still a great run defender and would be an excellent mentor.

1 trade to make

RB Javonte Williams

The Denver Broncos running back room is suddenly filled to the gills with talent. They already had Javonte Williams and Jaleel McLaughlin atop the depth chart prior to the 2024 NFL Draft, but then added Audric Estime in the fifth-round and Blake Watson as an undrafted free agent. That could make Williams, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract, available via trade. Dallas would be wise to check on his availability.

Despite the need, the Cowboys bypassed the running back position with each of their eight selections in the 2024 NFL Draft. Free agency offers little to nothing that inspires hope, even Ezekiel Elliott, but Javontae Williams is an intriguing option. He would immediately upgrade the position as Tony Pollard’s replacement.

The Cowboys can easily part with a late-draft pick in 2025 to acquire Williams’ services. The 5’10”, 220-pound RB is exactly what they need at the position. He is a true three-down back with the power to pick up the tough yards and the agility and contact balance to pick up chunk yardage down after down. Even if he ends up being a one-year rental he is well worth the investment if they can pry him away from the Broncos.
