Tony Khan responds to CM Punk’s claim that AEW did not pay for his triceps surgery

Earlier this month, CM Punk claimed that AEW did not pay for his surgery after he suffered a torn triceps at All Out 2022. Punk said nobody in AEW talked to him for six months following his backstage fight with The Elite that night. CM had to research, book, and pay for his own surgery.

Punk’s accusation sounds like a pretty big deal on the surface, in that it paints AEW in a very bad light when it comes to managing injuries. But this item was generally lost in the shuffle of all the other news that came out of Punk’s lengthy interview with Ariel Helwani.

AEW President Tony Khan was a on a call with the media today ahead of this Sunday’s (Apr. 21) Dynasty pay-per-view event, and he was asked about whether or not Punk’s claim is true.

Here is Khan’s response:

“We typically do pay those expenses. I’d have to look into that. We can’t say for sure. It doesn’t sound right to me. If that is the case, then I would reimburse him, honestly. I didn’t think that was the case, and it doesn’t sound right. So, I would have to look into that…typically we do cover those medical expenses, especially for something that occurred in the ring, as that did. So I would have to look into that. But no, I’m not sure about that. I can’t say for sure.”

For now, I think it’s fine to take Khan at his word that he doesn’t know if what Punk said is true or not. However, CM made this claim on April 1, more than two weeks ago. Someone in AEW should go look into it by now, even if it’s just to dispel the implication that AEW doesn’t reliably take care of its injured wrestlers.

What do you make of this one, Cagesiders?
