The Robert Lewandowski case continues to make people react in Spain. Expelled last November against Osasuna, the Polish international was given a heavy sanction of three games of suspension. From then on, Barça multiplied the appeals to have his sentence reduced. If the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected his request, the club was nevertheless able to field his striker against Espanyol, after his suspension was temporarily lifted by the central court in Madrid. Once he has done so, he will decide whether to maintain the precautionary measure which he enacted on December 30 and which allowed the Pole to play, or whether, on the contrary, he rejects it. In any case, this same court must get to the bottom of the case, but this process will take months. At Barca, they take it for granted that Lewandowski will be able to play against Atlético. There are only two scenarios. If Lewandowski is kept in custody, he is expected to continue to wait in the coming months for the investigation into his case to be completed and he would continue to play until further notice. If the judge cancels the precautionary measure, Lewandowski could not play immediately. If later, when he got to the bottom of the case, they agreed with him, Barca could only ask for compensation because they would have already complied with the sporting sanction. »

A fairly new and totally incomprehensible scenario for many observers, starting with Mundo Deportivo. The Catalan newspaper, however close to Barça, denounces the situation: “That Robert Lewandowski can play this game is irrelevant. From the moment Gil Manzano sent him off with two yellow cards in Pamplona, Lewandowski himself, Xavi and all football fans of Barça, Espanyol and any neutral team, knew the Pole could not play the next league game. A red in the championship implies, always and in any case, that you miss the next game. […] That the three-game sanction seemed unfair, as Xavi argues, may have its defenses, but what’s not acceptable is that against Espanyol the Barca forward didn’t serve the match suspension due to Pamplona’s red card, and that the decision that he could play the derby was taken by ordinary justice 24 hours before the match. And, more so, when the expulsion match was played on November 8. Barca played their cards well and used their legal resources to get Lewandowski, but what is not acceptable is that 50 days later there is no firm decision. Unusual, unfair and absurd. »
