Taylor Fritz says rankings system rewards more ‘boom-or-bust’ style than consistency

World No 10 Taylor Fritz is happy to be showing more consistent tennis in 2023 but noted that “boom-or-bust style” usually works better for rankings.

On Tuesday, Fritz saw off Holger Rune 6-3 6-4 to progress into the Miami Masters quarterfinal.

With that win, Fritz reached at least a quarterfinal in each of his past five tournaments.

When the Indian Wells Masters started earlier this month, Fritz was the fifth-ranked player in the world.

Even though Fritz made the Indian Wells quarterfinal and did well in the desert, he still lost a notable number of points because he failed to defend his title.

Fritz explains why ‘boom-or-bust style’ works better for rankings

“I’m playing at a level that I feel like I can do over and over again. It’s nice that that level can put me in the top 10. I felt like last year I was very, like, boom or bust. Either playing really good on a week and I could just go win the tournament or I would just lose in the first or second round. So it is nice to feel more consistent, but also, the way the tour, the points and everything works, it does kind of reward that boom-or-bust style a bit more. It’s more beneficial for rankings and stuff to be winning tournaments than being very consistent every week, making quarters, semis. So hopefully I can take it, you know, couple steps further than quarter-finals and have some of those really big results like I did last year. It’s nice to definitely be just more consistent in general,” Fritz said, per Tennis Majors.

In October, Fritz broke into the top-10 for the first time in his career.

On February 27th, Fritz achieved a career-high ranking of No 5 in the world.

Fritz is a Masters champion and has been ranked inside the top-5 but winning a Grand Slam and becoming the world No 1 remains his top goal.
