The NFL is set to release their schedule sometime in May. How many nationally televised games will the Detroit Lions receive?

With the NFL Draft in the rearview and the calendar turning to May, the NFL schedule release is just around the corner. Though the Detroit Lions’ opponents have been set for quite some time, it’s nearly time to finally see the dates associated with these matchups, as well as when the Lions will get their bye, and how many televised games they will receive.

Last year, the Lions had a whopping six nationally televised games (including Thanksgiving and a flexed game with the Broncos), and I’d expect to see another high number this year with how successful they were last season and how much hype is still surrounding the team.

Today’s Question of the Day is…

How many nationally televised games (including Thanksgiving) will the Lions get in 2024?

My answer: Five.

After an 8-2 finish to the regular season in 2022 that was capped off by a win at Lambeau Field to deny the Green Bay Packers from making the playoffs, the Lions’ hype entering the 2023 season was through the roof.

The Lions lived up to the lofty expectations placed on them last year, and proved that they were the real deal by being 30 minutes away from a Super Bowl appearance. When given a national stage to perform on, the Lions were 4-2 in those games—and should have been 5-1 if not for a poorly managed finish to the Cowboys game.

I think the NFL will hand the Lions a similar amount of nationally televised games compared to last year, and I could see them matching teams like the Chiefs and Cowboys (led the NFL in primetime games last year) with the most. The Lions are an exciting team to watch, and they have a head coach that is a sound bite machine. The NFL will continue to want to capitalize on that.
