Stan Wawrinka joins Daniil Medvedev in playing Rotterdam

Stan Wawrinka has signed up to play at an ATP 500 tournament in Rotterdam, per Michal Samulski.

In February, Wawrinka will be making his sixth main draw appearance on the indoor-hard courts of Rotterdam.

Stan Wawrinka will play ATP500 Rotterdam, 11-19 February.

Wawrinka has had success in Rotterdam, having made two finals at the tournament.

In 2015, Wawrinka defeated Tomas Berdych in the Rotterdam final.

Four years later, Wawrinka made his second Rotterdam final but this time didn’t win the title after losing to Gael Monfils.

Wawrinka’s last appearance in Rotterdam came in 2021, when he lost to Karen Khachanov in the first round.

Wawrinka is now set to return to Rotterdam as he joins a star-studded player field that includes Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Holger Rune, Andrey Rublev and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Wawrinka feels he still has the game

In early December, Wawrinka competed at the Diriyah Tennis Cup.

In Saudi Arabia, Wawrinka defeated Matteo Berrettini and Rublev before losing to Medvedev in the semifinal. 

“I’m not playing badly for my age, I’ve been on tour for many years and luckily we played a super tiebreak in the third set, which was the best for me. I’m happy because I’ve worked very hard physically but also on my tennis. I love the game and I love the competition, so I’m in I’m going to do my best for next season,” Wawrinka said in Saudi Arabia.

Ahead of 2023, Wawrinka decided to split with Dani Vallverdu and hire his old coach Magnus Norman.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Wawrinka wants to finish his career with Norman being a part of his team.

“There have been changes after the US Open. I decided to stop with Dani Vallverdu and, together with Magnus, we are looking for the best possible balance to write a final chapter. With Magnus, we want to finish writing our story together. Magnus is the one who knows my game the best, the one who has helped me the most in my career. He is the one who knows my game the best. The one who has helped me the most in my career. He will take care of the off-season and the biggest tournaments, including the Grand Slam. The rest we have to discuss,” Wawrinka said.
