Solheim Cup 2024, the four US vice-captains

on

On Team USA at the 2024 Solheim Cup, captain Stacy Lewis announced Morgan Pressel, Angela Stanford, Paula Creamer and Brittany Lincicome as her assistants.

From 13 to 15 September, in the United States, in Gainesville (Virginia), on the course of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, the US team will face the European team with the aim of regaining the trophy seven years after the last victory. The United States has not won in the women’s Ryder Cup since 2017 (Iowa), followed by losses in 2019 (Gleneagles, Scotland) and 2021 (Ohio, United States). Even the draw (14-14) in 2023 in Malaga (Spain) did not allow the United States to bring home the trophy, which remained in the hands of the reigning champions.

Solheim Cup, news

For Pressel and Stanford this is a confirmation in the role of assistants, while Creamer and Lincicome will play this role for the first time. Stacy Lewis welcomed the new assistants to her staff with enthusiasm, praising their experience and love for the Solheim Cup.

The Solheim Cup is a biennial golf tournament featuring professional women golfers competing in teams representing Europe and the United States. It is named after Karsten Solheim, a Norwegian-American golf club manufacturer who played a pivotal role in its establishment.

The inaugural Cup took place in 1990, initially being held in even-numbered years until 2002, alternating with the Ryder Cup, the men’s equivalent event. Following the postponement of the 2001 Ryder Cup due to the September 11 attacks, there was a general reshuffle of team golf events, and the Solheim Cup transitioned to odd-numbered years starting from 2003. Another reshuffle occurred in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Solheim Cup is set to return to even-numbered years from 2024 onward.

The United States teams have claimed victory in the cup ten times, while Europe has won it eight times. The current titleholders are Europe, who retained the cup following a 14–14 draw at Finca Cortesin in Málaga in 2023.

The rules of golf are relatively intricate compared to other sports because they are applied outdoors, in close proximity to nature and animals. Adherence to these rules is fundamental in the game of golf, which, relying almost entirely on self-control and the players’ own conscience, often sees results distorted, sometimes consciously, but more often unconsciously or due to carelessness, as many players fail to observe the rules of play. In addition to the rules, golf adheres to a code of conduct known as etiquette, which generally entails playing the game with due respect for the golf course and other players. Etiquette is an essential component of this sport.
