Shaikira King runs UK age 14 best of 2:02.60 for 800m

on

Exciting athlete goes third all-time as an under-17 while Laura Muir runs 5km PB and there are UK titles won on the hills by Scout Atkin, Joe Steward and Kris Jones in latest round-up

BMC REGIONAL RACES, Gillingham, April 21

Shaikira King broke the UK age-15 800m record with a sensational 2:02.60 which went third all-time among UK under-17s after Phoebe Gill (2:01.50) and Jo White (2:02.0) who were both aged 16 when they set their times.

However, King achieved this performance in a mixed race so it won’t count as a qualifying time for the World Under-20 Championships (2:04.00) and European Under-18 Championships (2:06.00) though both seem a formality.

King’s previous best was 2:03.79 in the English Schools heats last June although the older Gill beat her in the final on that occasion.

This winter King won the Midland cross-country title but finished runner-up to Olivia Forrest in the English Schools cross-country after stumbling in the closing metres.

She also ran a 4:43.23 indoor mile, which is quicker than the UK under-17 outdoor record, so on this form could be targeting more records in the summer.

ASICS DULWICH PODIUM 5km, Dulwich Park, London, April 20

Jack Kavanagh and Marta Perez won the elite races at this new venue in Dulwich Park, which is renowned as hosting one of the quickest UK parkruns but here cold and windy conditions slowed times.

Laura Muir (Cliff Hide)

However the star run getting the most attention was that of Olympic 1500m silver medallist and multi European champion Laura Muir who ran in the men’s B race.

Muir attacked it from the off and was through the first lap in 4:57 on the back of a big pack but she faded a little on the second half as she got isolated and her last two laps were 5:09 and 5:14 and she ended up with 15:20 which was a road PB and moved her to equal 10th all-time in Britain alongside fellow Scot Yvonne Murray who achieved her run over 30 years ago.

The men’s A race was more tactical as Kavanagh had laps of 4:42, 4:52 and 4:36 to hold off Callum Tharme and Richard Slade.

Marta Perez (Cliff Hide)

The women’s race was more of an international event as Spain’s Olympic 1500m finalist eased away from Kiwi Georgie Grgec and another Spaniard Irene Sanchez-Escribano on the last lap. Her laps were 5:18, 5:18 and 5:12. as she timed 15:48.

BUCS indoor 1500m champion Alex Shipley was the first Brit in her 5km road debut in 15:58.

UKA BRITISH MOUNTAIN RUNNING (UPHILL ONLY) CHAMPIONSHIPS (inc, European off-road championships trials), Keswick, April 19

Joe Steward and Scout Adkin were convincing winners over an uphill only course which took them up Skiddaw from Dodd Wood, north of Keswick.

Behind Steward, Jacob Adkin and Kris Jones battled their way up the course, with Adkin pulling away on the final climb to the summit. Finlay Grant, who won a bronze medal in the U20 up-and-down event at the last edition of the European Off-Road Championships in 2022, finished strongly to take fourth.

Joe Steward (Mark Croasdale)

In the women’s race, where Adkin’s sister Scout finished almost three minutes clear of the field, Sara Willhoit, part of the bronze medal winning GB & NI team at last year’s World Championships, finished second ahead of Scarlet Dale while) Elle Twentyman, a newcomer to mountain running, put in a strong performance in fourth.

The first two men and women are automatically selected for the GB & NI team for the European Off-Road Championships in Annecy at the end of May, with the rest of the team to be decided by the selectors.

The U20 non-championships race finished on Carlside, just below the main Skiddaw summit, where Edward Hobbs and Eve Whitaker finished as convincing winners. Jack Sanderson and Alex Poulston completed the men’s podium while Whitaker was followed home by 2021 world team champions Lauren Russell and Amelie Lane.
