It turns out most fans have a positive outlook

This week has seen a lot of prognostication on the future of the Carolina Panthers. The team’s 2024 draft class is now set and that is apparently enough information to predict either a Super Bowl or another six years of football winter. I thought it just meant that we had a better picture of the roster for this fall.

The good news is that, for all of the hyperbole, Panthers fans are relatively positive about this draft class while still considering some of its bigger name players as at least some degree of a reach. That implies to me that fans have a well moderated, if hopeful, outlook on this offseason.

As it stands, 82% of Panthers fans think Carolina was a winner coming out of the 2024 NFL Draft. That’s no surprise when scouts and national media types start throwing around comparisons between Xavier Legette and Seattle Seahawks star D.K. Metcalf. That carries some weight when the leadership in Carolina was instrumental in the professional development of Metcalf in Seattle.

Meanwhile, only 25% of fans wouldn’t characterize any of the team’s draft picks as a reach.

The rest of you pointed fingers at across the top of the Panthers draft, with a plurality settling on linebacker Trevin Wallace. I have a sneaking suspicion that was primarily for one of two reasons. One, Wallace is a defender. Their names are rarely as popular for casual fans of the draft and so he had less recognition than Legette or Jonathon Brooks. Two, and through no fault of his own, his name didn’t rhyme with ‘Wayton Pilson’ and that was enough to earn him some consternation after his selection.
