Sergio Garcia: “I will be a DP member again”

One of the most fervent supporters of LIV Golf since its inception is Sergio Garcia.

The Spanish player was one of the first to sign a contract with the Saudi League and was one of the four players to resign from the DP World Tour after the Sports Resolution Arbitration and Media Centre closed the sports arbitration in favor of the former European Tour.

The decision was motivated by the desire to avoid fines imposed on players who had participated in LIV tournaments without authorization.

However, El Niño has announced that he has decided to reverse course.

During an interview on the latest episode of the Rick Shiels Golf Show podcast (recorded last November but broadcasted only now), Garcia stated:

“I will be back as a member of the DP World Tour next year, and I will play my four tournaments (the minimum number to maintain membership).”

“When I signed with LIV, I kept repeating that I wanted to remain a member of the DP World Tour to play my four tournaments, to maintain my card.”

“Obviously, they didn’t make it easy, and it wasn’t possible.”

Last year, Sergio had paid the DP World Tour £700,000 for the fines against him before the Ryder Cup, hoping to be part of Team Europe, which was impossible due to his resignation from the Tour itself.

And here is the real underlying reason for the choice of the 2017 Masters Champion of the Year, who has Bethpage in his sights.

“I want to have the best chance to be there.”

“The fact of playing few tournaments will make it quite difficult, it will mean that I will have to give my best.”

“But what matters is that this will make me eligible.”

“If they see (Luke Donald’s staff, Ed.) my efforts, how I will play in the LIV, and how consistent my game will be, I can hope to be considered. Not only for my game but also for the contribution I can bring to the team and my history in the competition.”

Speaking then of the possibility of one day assuming the role of Captain, which before his joining LIV Golf was very high, Garcia stated:

“At the moment, I’m not thinking about the role of Captain.”

“I feel like I still have a lot to give as a player, but it’s definitely a possibility; we’ll see what happens.”
