PCS Spring 2024 – Introduction

The 2024 Pacific Championship Series (PCS) is the eighth season of the professional League of Legends league in Asia-Pacific. It marks the second year of partnership with the Oceanic League, the LCO, as well as the addition of the League of Legends Japan League (LJL). This means that these two leagues will have to battle with the PCS teams to get their slots at the international stages. Below is the list of the organizations taking part in this split:

  • Beyond Gaming
  • CTBC Flying Oyster
  • Deep Cross Gaming
  • Frank Esports
  • HELL PIGS
  • J Team
  • PSG Talon
  • West Point PH

The format

Compared to other leagues in the LoL esports ecosystem, the PCS is bringing a completely different format to spice things up in 2024. The regular split is divided into two stages. In the first one, the eight teams compete in a single round robin in Bo3 matches. The main change is the 1v1 Showdown to decide the side selection for each match.

In the second phase, the eight teams are seeded into two groups of 4, with the top 4 playing in the contender group. All these four teams will advance to playoffs, with the top 2 getting a bye to the 2nd round. The bottom four, instead, will fight for survival to lock the last two spots. All matches are also Bo3.

The expectations and teams

Compared to the previous seasons, there is a clear distinction between the top teams looking to compete for access to international stages and the ones fighting in the bottom pack. CTBC, PSG Talon, BYG, and FRANK Esports are the top four squads and they are likely going to be the contenders for the slot at MSI.

That said, it will be interesting to see what the level is compared to the LCO and LJL, which will join during the Spring Playoffs. While the PCS teams are stronger on paper, we’ll see whether someone will struggle against the top teams from other regions.

The PCS is ending next week, with playoffs beginning on March 11. The winner of the spring championship will be slotted in the play-in stage at MSI 2024.
