Czech qualifier Linda Noskova stunned former world no. 1 Garbine Muguruza in the first round of the Lyon Open on Monday. Noskova won 6-1, 6-4 in an hour and 13 minutes.

Noskova saved six of the seven break points she faced and converted four of the six break points she had on the Spaniard’s serve. The 18-year-old won 72% of her first-serve points to Muguruza’s 60% and 53% of her second-serve points to her opponent’s 44%.

Lyon Open: French players suffer losses

This is the third straight loss this year for Muguruza, who’d received a wildcard to play in the French event this week. She’s now lost all three tournaments she’s played so far this season in the first round itself, including the Australian Open.

Meanwhile, Noskova will play sixth seed Mayar Sherif. The Egyptian advanced to the second round after her first-round opponent, Croatian qualifier Ana Konjuh retired in the match. Sherif was up 6-2, 3-2 at the time.

Another Croatian, fourth seed Petra Martic reached the second round with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 comeback win over French wildcard Kristina Mladenovic. Martic needed two hours and 14 minutes to win.

Another seeded player who moved into the second round was the fifth-seeded Anastasia Potapova. The 21-year-old came through against Spanish qualifier Marina Bassols Ribera in two hours and 14 minutes. The 43rd-ranked Potapova dropped the opening set before eventually making a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 comeback.

Maryna Zanevska defeated Dalma Galfi 6-1, 7-6(3) to reach the round-of-16. The Belgian now awaits either Madison Brengle or second seed Shuai Zhang.

Jule Niemeier claimed a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 win over Olga Danilovic. The German will play Camila Osorio next for a chance to reach the quarter-finals. The Colombian posted the sole upset at the Lyon Open on Monday after taking out third seed Alize Cornet, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in two hours and 23 minutes.
