Kyle Chalmers celebrated his success at last week’s Short Course World Championships with two new tattoos courtesy of Aussie teammate Matthew Temple and British breaststroke ace Adam Peaty.

Temple inked his 4×100 medley relay split — a 48.34 butterfly leg, the fastest of the meet — onto Chalmers’ skin, which he calls his “journal.” Together, Chalmers, Temple, Joshua Yong, and Isaac Cooper tied the U.S. for the gold medal with a new (shared) world record of 3:18.98. The four digits from Temple’s split are now permanently etched around his waistline.

“Matt Temple putting his GOAT time on my journal,” Chalmers posted on his Instagram story.

Peaty, the back-to-back Olympic champion in the 100 breast, also tattooed his signature onto Chalmers’ calf. Chalmers spoke with SwimSwam about training with Peaty in Adelaide following Short Course Worlds in Melbourne.

“I think if we were competitors, we wouldn’t be friends,” Chalmers said of Peaty. “He’s a person who I think learns to hate his competitors, so I’m glad I’m not on the receiving end of that because I much prefer Adam Peaty as one of my best mates.

“I’ve never trained with a guy of his caliber before,” he added. “He’s one of the greatest ever in our sport.”

Chalmers secured seven medals total at Short Course Worlds, including three golds. His victory in the 100 free marked his first short-course world title, checking an item off his bucket list.

Since last winter, Chalmers has boasted a big tattoo across his chest that says “only the strong will survive” in German.
