on

Pokemon GO was released back in 2016 and instantly became a hit. At the time, the game grappled the world with its unique real-world mechanics leading to people roaming the streets to scout for their favorite Pokemon. Now, more than 8 years have passed and the game has evolved a whole lot. This brings the question: how many people play Pokemon GO in 2024? Here’s the answer.

How many people play Pokemon GO?

Pokemon GO is certainly far from dead. Active player numbers show an active player count across the last 30 days north of 81 million players. This is down just down 6 million from the previous month, however, the new major updates shown in the Pokemon presents are expected to recoup numbers. With numbers in the double-digit millions, even a 6 million drop-off is nothing that an active player base will need to worry about. Content continues to be weekly, and there’s plenty to do for new players looking to level up.

As a result, Pokemon GO was still amongst the highest-grossing mobile games of 2023. The five most represented regions for Pokemon GO for daily active users were:

  • United States
  • Great Britain
  • Japan
  • Sweden
  • Canada

Content creators all across the world are given their voices on the official Pokemon tournament channels. Latin America is also heavily represented.

How many people play Pokemon GO competitively?

Multiplayer options and things to do have grown in spades. Playing casually, there’s plenty to do besides just collecting Pokestops and catching Pokemon. The game does try and guide its players towards the competitive scenario. Weekly and monthly in-game leagues give players incentives for playing PvP content, with different restrictions to help bring variety. In addition to a forgiving and expansive ranking system, there’s plenty to do against other players.

Competitive play is also supported in official events. Just like Pokemon VGC, Pokemon GO and the TCG have their own circuits. PoGO is streamed on the official Pokemon YouTube alongside its contemporaries on its individual stream.

Dortmund Regional boasted just under 100 players, but events like Liverpool have shown that more than 200 players will show up for Pokemon GO at the larger regionals. Pokemon GO doesn’t make use of the Juniors, Seniors, and Masters divisions like the other games due to not being nearly as large; but the player counts for Pokemon GO often come close to or completely dwarf the junior division entrants for the TCG, which is often the most populated game type.
