Humanoid: “It’s boring to play” laneswaps

After the Absolute Cinema that was Fnatic’s 2-0 victory over GAM, the LEC runners-up now head into the Mid-Season Invitational bracket stage. They’ll begin their run in more or less the most difficult way possible by facing Korean giants Gen.G and their mid lane superstar Chovy.

We spoke with Fnatic’s Marek “Humanoid” Brázda ahead of their upcoming series.

Esports.net: What were your thoughts after being drawn against Gen.G?

Humanoid: My thoughts were that we could only get a really strong team in BLG or Gen.G, so it doesn’t really matter. But I think I’m happy that we play against Gen.G because I wanted to play against Chovy for a long time and I never got the chance. So I’m happy with the draw.

How do you think you’ll match up against him?

Yeah, I think I will do good.

Lee Jones: If you aren’t able to beat them then you’ll remain in the tournament but will have hopefully gained useful insight and practice from the series.

Do you think there’s a benefit to facing one of the favourites early on like this?

Humanoid:I guess it will be a way to test how good we are because I think we had a pretty close series against Top Esports. I think Gen.G is probably better so it will be even harder but I think for sure there is a lot to learn from that. Maybe we can even win but we’ll see.

Despite the loss, was the series against TES a confidence builder given that it was so close?

Humanoid:Yeah, for me for sure it felt like we could take them. I didn’t feel like they were much better than us, especially since we started a lot of the games in a really bad position just from level one. So I felt like we could take them in a series. So it for sure gives us a lot of confidence.

How do you find playing in the laneswap meta?

Humanoid: Well, for me, it doesn’t really change much, but I don’t enjoy it. I think it’s a really boring way to play the game. I’m gonna guess that they are gonna change something about it so it’s not possible like they did many years ago. But for now, I’m just gonna have to deal with it. I think it’s just boring. It’s boring to watch probably, it’s boring to play, especially for the top laners that are going to be low levels.

Lee Jones: You tweeted last week about some PC issues.

Have they been resolved now, and do you know if any other teams were affected?

Humanoid: Yeah, now it’s fine. It was for the first few days. It was really low FPS. I think some others had it. I’m not sure if it’s solved for them, I would imagine it’s also fine for now. But yeah, it was other teams too.

Touching on the LEC, what do you think is needed for Fnatic to be able to get a title off of G2?

Humanoid: I think it’s honestly to just keep playing with confidence, because we lost to them so many times. Sometimes I think we go into the series being kind of low on confidence. But I think now we know that we can beat them, especially after the finals which was also pretty close, and now we are doing decent at MSI. I think everyone knows now that we can beat them, so we just need to keep it up and play with confidence in the next playoffs.

Lee Jones: There’s been this whole debate about Korean imports in the LEC, particularly surrounding SK changing their bot lane.

As a team currently fielding two Koreans, what do you make of that discourse?

Humanoid: I think it always depends on how good the import is because you can get a Korean import who’s just really bad still, but you can also get one that is really insane. So yeah, if you see a chance to get a really good player, I think go for it. But I don’t think you should just be like: “We need to get a Korean player no matter what, even though he might be just a completely average player”.

Noah posted a picture of you dipping your BBQ in ice cream. What the f**k?

Yeah, I mean, that’s what I’m asking myself too.

So did you not really enjoy it then? 

No, it was my first time trying it. It was just like, I had an ice cream in my hand and I still had some meat on my plate. So I was like, “Yeah, let’s try it”. It didn’t taste too good. I’m not going to do it again.

Have you had better experience with these kinds of experiments before? 

Not really. I hadn’t really experimented like that too much, it was the first time.
