Stephen Jones is still optimistic about a deal with Dak Prescott.
More importantly, Jones said on Mad Dog Radio on Tuesday that the Cowboys have a plan to get Prescott’s deal done as well as new contracts for wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and edge rusher Micah Parsons. He would like to get it Prescott done before the start of the season, but they don’t want to put timeline on things.
“These things happen over time and when they do happen, they happen fast, Jones said. “They take time when you think about the resources for a quarterback. They just take time.”
Jones said there is no doubt in his mind that Prescott can lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl and break the now 28-year drought since their last Super Bowl title in 1996.
“Absolutely. I mean, I totally think Dak can lead us to a championship,” Jones said. “He does everything the right way. He’s certainly the leader of this football team. He keeps everybody motivated in the offseason. He’s got everybody working out and doing all the things that it takes to put in the work to give yourself every opportunity to win a championship.”
The Cowboys have won 12 games in each of the last three seasons, but have just one playoff win to show for it. Prescott has just two in his eight years as Cowboys quarterback.

In Coach’s Corner, we reached out to each of the draftees’ college position coaches to find out more about their development in college on and off the field, their fits in Dallas and how it coincided with their time in college, and what they might need to work on before touching the NFL field.
Next up is Auburn defensive tackle Justin Rogers, who we spoke to Auburn defensive tackles coach Vontrell King-Williams about regarding these topics.
Q: From the moment he arrived at Auburn from Kentucky, what could you sense from his work ethic to get on the field?
A: With Justin, what he brought to our program was instant credibility. He had done it in this league (SEC). He had transferred from Kentucky and was very productive. On the same token, we also let him know that just because you have done it in this league, you haven’t done it at Auburn yet. He had to fight for a starting role and significant snaps and ultimately, that’s what he did. He was a good mentor for our younger guys too.
Q: What would you say he improved on the most in his time with Auburn?
A: I think understanding the kind of pass rusher he was, not trying to do anything outside of his body. He’s a big guy so he has to set everything up with power, and not try to do all of these cross-chops and those things. I think that was one of the things he focused on and then the second thing was becoming a leader. Being a leader that everyone wants and follows because of your actions. I feel like he did that, he matured pretty well in his year with us.

It’s never too early to start thinking about fantasy football.
CeeDee Lamb (Pick: 1.2)
CeeDee Lamb was the best wide receiver in fantasy football last year and there is no indication of his numbers taking a dip this coming season. Lamb is the first option in a pass happy system and his chemistry with Dak will continue to grow.
Dak Prescott (Rounds 7-9)
Dak Prescott has proven each year that he is a fantastic starting option in fantasy football. Dak Prescott was the third ranked QB in fantasy football last year but he slips in drafts due to the many dual threat QB’s in the NFL. If QB’s go early in your draft consider drafting him in the 7th if not wait until the 8th or even 9th round.
Jake Ferguson (Rounds 12-13)
Jake Ferguson had an excellent sophomore season earning Pro-Bowl honors. As the 9th ranked tight end in 2023 I expect his numbers to improve next year. Jake Ferguson is a steal in fantasy football drafts due to the fall off in tight end production after Travis Kelce, Sam Laporta, and George Kittle.

It looks like the Dallas Cowboys could have come down to running back and linebacker in the third round.
The Cowboys did not draft a running back at all on draft weekend, but they did bring back Ezekiel Elliott first thing on the Monday morning following it. Elliott’s return feels a little bit like a Cowboys Thing, but the merits of it are valid in a vacuum. Zeke can certainly contribute to a team in 2024 and presuming the Cowboys do not put too much on his plate then the jokes and snickering about it all will all be for not. I recently discussed this overall idea with Kay Adams on her show Up & Adams on Monday if you would like to watch.
But back to the draft, it was the worst-kept secret in the world that Dallas was going to bring Zeke back at some point, and to say that this did not impact the way they approached their process would be naïve.
In some small way, it is possible that the pending Zeke return allowed the Cowboys to prioritize Marist Liufau at number 87 overall and say no thanks to certain running backs like MarShawn Lloyd and Jaylen Wright who went to the Green Bay Packers and Miami Dolphins, respectively. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler those were two players who Dallas was considering at 87.
The Cowboys were working the fringes on running back, one of several needs, but the lack of a fourth-round pick hurt their chances.
The No. 87 pick was a spot where they could have chosen a back, but the Cowboys felt Notre Dame linebacker Marist Liufau not only addressed another major need but provided the toughness to fit within Mike Zimmer’s defense. Dallas had shown enough pre-draft love to MarShawn Lloyd that the USC tailback (who went to Green Bay at No. 88) thought the Cowboys would be one of the possible teams to draft him.
The Cowboys also really liked Tennessee running back Jaylen Wright, who went No. 120 overall (the 20th pick of the fourth round) to Miami. If the Cowboys had a fourth-rounder and Wright were still available, chances are they would have jumped on him.
