Andy Murray: I can go deeper than a third-round of a Grand Slam

Andy Murray says he has no doubt that he can again make a deep Grand Slam run after concluding his Australian Open run with a third-round loss to Roberto Bautista Agut.

Murray, 35, stunned 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in his Australian Open first-round match before outlasting 26-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis in five-set thriller that lasted nearly six hours.

This was Murray’s first Grand Slam third-round appearance since 2021 Wimbledon.

“I felt good about the way I was playing, it’s more enjoyable for me when I’m coming into a major event and really believing I can do some damage. But, yeah, I can have a deeper run than a third round of a slam, there’s no question about that but obviously, you can have draws open up for you but I also need to help myself with that. If I was playing this level last year, I probably wouldn’t be ranked 50 or 60 in the world so it’s up to me to try and change that,” Murray said, per Eurosport.

Murray proud of his efforts

After surviving five-setters against Berrettini and Kokkinakis, a fatigued and exhausted Murray gave everything he had left but still couldn’t beat Roberto Bautista Agut.

After 25th-ranked Bautista Agut handed Murray a 6-1 6-7 (3) 6-3 6-4 loss, the Briton said he was proud of his efforts and fighting spirit.

“I feel like I gave everything that I had to this event so I’m proud of that. With everything you’re doing, that’s all you can do. You can’t always control the outcome, you can’t control how well you’re going to play or the result but you can control the effort that you put into it and I gave everything I had the last three matches so I’m very proud of that,” Murray reflected.

Last year, Murray skipped the French Open and focused on Wimbledon.

Murray certainly still feels that Wimbledon is still his best shot at making a deep Grand Slam run and it will be interesting to see how the Briton does in the remaining Major tournaments in 2023.
