All the troubles of the WTA Finals: now the rain ruins the matches

on

First the structures, completed on the eve of the WTA Finals in Cancun, then the problems with the schedule, now the rain. Jessica Pegula is the first and only tennis player to qualify for the semifinals of the year-end women’s Masters in Cancun, Mexico. In these first three matches, the American has proven to be the player who has best adapted to the prohibitive conditions and the playing surface, which also rewards her type of play which is not as aggressive and intense compared to other direct contenders for the title. The American swept the group with 3 victories, the last one achieved against Maria Sakkari. The match began in a fluctuating manner on serve for both: the Greek retained serve only on one occasion, losing the first set 6-3 despite the inconsistent performance of her opponent. In the second set, Pegula changed gear further and went ahead 4-0, before closing the match with a score of 6-2 and giving herself access to the next phase of the competition. “From day one it was very difficult to play in these conditions. The wind, for example, was crazy in every match. This year I came to this event much fresher with a new attitude, better prepared mentally and physically,” declared the winner at the press conference.

Sabalenka-Rybakina’s match stopped due to rain

The wind and rain had a significant impact on the second singles match scheduled, which awarded the other pass to the semi-finals. Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina were stopped at 6-2, 3-5 and will resume battling on the court only late in the evening (local time) today, Friday 3 November. The match was also interrupted 5 times due to very strong winds which prevented the two from serving. With bad weather also arriving, the organizers had no choice but to postpone the conclusion of the meeting. The Belarusian, with two breaks in the opening game and in the fifth game, took home the first set. Before the interruption the number one gave up serve to zero and gave Rybakina the opportunity to resume with the possibility of extending the match. We recall Iga Swiatek is also close to the semifinal: she only need to win two games in the match against Ons Jabeur.
