French tennis player Alize Cornet has announced that she will be ending her professional tennis journey in front of her home fans at the upcoming French Open.
Cornet, who turned 34 in January, has been in pro tennis since 2006 and she has made a nice career for herself, which includes several notable results and achievements.
But now, Cornet is just 3-9 this year – has plummeted to No. 107 in the world – and she feels it’s time for her to put an end to her pro tennis chapter.
“I have a very special announcement to make to you. I will play my last Roland-Garros in a month and I will retire immediately. It’s the right time because it’s the result of a long journey… I just feel like it’s time. I don’t want to be pushed out, I want to choose. And it’s the right time for me to say goodbye to tennis,” Cornet announced on France’s Canal +.

Cornet had wins over Serena Williams, Iga Swiatek
During her career, Cornet has six times lifted WTA titles and she also played a big part in France’s 2019 Fed Cup win – today the competition is known as the Billie Jean King Cup. Also, Cornet once came inches away from entering the top-10 as she achieved her career-high ranking of No. 11 in the world in 2009 February.
Not only that Cornet won multiple times and come close to making the top-10, but she also managed to beat Williams in three of their seven meetings.
In the summer of 2022, Cornet also had one of the most memorable moments of her career when she defeated world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the Wimbledon third round to end the Pole’s 37-match winning streak.
Now, Cornet is preparing for her final tournament at the French Open, which will kick off on May 26th.
