It comes down to Peters and the Bears assistant GM

Kyle’s update, January 11, 8:13 a.m. PT: The Washington Commanders have narrowed their search for their President of Football operations job down to two candidates: Bears assistant General Manager Ian Cunningham and 49ers assistant General Manager Adam Peters, per CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones.

Kyle’s update, 10:47 a.m. PT: Add the Las Vegas Raiders to the list. Adam Schefter tweeted that Vegas has also requested permission to interview Adam Peters. The Raiders also contacted the Colts to speak with assistant general manager Ed Dodds for the same position.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Peters will be interviewed on Tuesday or Wednesday by the Commanders.

In the wake of all the Black Monday firings of head coaches are some front-office shakeups as well. The Washington Commanders have fired Ron Rivera—we saw that one coming. Something we also should have seen coming was they were interviewing for their general manager. ESPN’s Adam Schefter says they have requested an interview with 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters.

Peters getting interview requests should be no surprise. Every year, it’s a game of “Will he or won’t he?”

The good news on this one is Adam Peters is a Bay Area native, and he’s said on multiple occasions he is happy where he is.

Nothing stops teams from requesting interviews, and Peters has demonstrated himself as someone who will be a general manager one day—but a great one. He’s going to get requests; that’s just a given.

For Peters, he may finally have the itch to run his own football front office and get a fresh start. San Francisco can counter everything by giving him a promotion, but that hasn’t happened yet. One alternative is making John Lynch president of football operations only and then giving the GM title to Peters.

One thing to keep in mind is the Commanders hired former Golden State Warriors General Manager Bob Myers to assist with the search. Myers is from the Bay Area as well, and that thinking may be that having someone from a familiar locale will help in luring him to the opposite end of the country. Maybe?

It’s a request right now, and there’s more to come. Get ready for the rumors and speculation.
