The reason Kevin Nash’s character didn’t die in John Wick

John Wick, movie

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the release of John Wick, the story of a retired hitman who, while grieving the loss of his wife, gets pulled back into a world of assassins when thugs break into his home, steal his car, and kill his beloved dog. The film’s success led to three sequels, with those surviving Wick’s vengeance returning for each installment. Notably absent from the sequels is WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash, whose character survived an encounter with Wick but did not return in the series.

In the first of four films starring Keanu Reeves as John Wick, Nash makes a cameo in the flick as Francis, a hulking bouncer at the Red Circle nightclub. As Wick’s pursuit of his wrongdoers leads him to the Red Circle, he approaches Francis from behind, quietly coming out of the darkness before putting a gun to the back of Francis’ head. A friendly yet tense dialogue ensued, the subtlety of which many viewers may not have picked up on.

As Wick holds Francis hostage, he remarks, “You’ve lost weight.” Francis replies, “Over 60 pounds.” Shortly after, Wick suggests that Francis take the night off.

As it turned out, Francis was speaking in code, covertly informing Wick there were 60 guards in the club. Understanding the implicit danger, Francis replied, ”Thank you, sir.” He then removed his earpiece and quietly left the scene. Nash confirmed this tidbit about the movie in an interview years ago.

Despite his brief appearance, Nash’s role in the film was a pleasant surprise for many wrestling fans. Armed with this information about his part, it might be worthwhile to rewatch John Wick to catch any other hidden messages that may have been overlooked.
