Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

Bears, Patriots win Round 1 of the NFL Draft, while Falcons, Broncos are massive losers – SB Nation
Rapid fire. Winners: Eagles: Getting Quinyon Mitchell is yet another “how did they manage to get him?” pick that benefitted from overreach.

2024 NFL Draft: Most improved units after Round 1 – PFF
Philadelphia Eagles: Secondary. The board fell perfectly for Philadelphia, which needed a cornerback. Darius Slay and James Bradberry are both over 30 years old, and the depth behind those two was shaky. The Eagles ranked 27th in expected points added allowed per pass play last season while dealing with injuries in their secondary. Mitchell was a top-10 player on the PFF big board and the top cornerback on the consensus big board entering the draft. He graded out extremely well in PFF’s advanced coverage metrics, forced more incompletions than any other FBS cornerback over the past two seasons at Toledo and fits well theoretically in a Vic Fangio defense on the outside. Adding him to the secondary was a win for Philadelphia in the back half of the first round.

NFL Draft Results: Eagles pick Quinyon Mitchell at No. 22 – BGN
With the 22nd pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select … Quinyon Mitchell, cornerback, Toledo! There were rumors about the Birds trading up to grab Mitchell but Howie Roseman was able to land the first cornerback off the board — and the first cornerback selected by the Eagles since 2002 — without giving up extra picks. Pretty nice! Mitchell was the player we selected for the Eagles in the 2024 SB Nation NFL Writers mock draft.

Always Sunny – Iggles Blitz
Mitchell is the guy I wanted. My fear is that the Eagles would have to trade up for him. We heard talk of them moving up with Denver or Seattle. Instead, Howie played it perfectly. He sat and waited. One of the key jobs for a GM is to talk to teams and try to understand what they’ll do. The Eagles got a player they really wanted and didn’t have to move up at all to get him. Great job by Howie of doing his research and then having the discipline to let things fall. Mitchell is a terrific prospect.

2024 NFL draft: Mel Kiper’s Round 1 winners, losers, values – ESPN+
How about all of the corners dropping? The Eagles were able to take the first one, and they went with Quinyon Mitchell at No. 22. While I had Cooper DeJean slightly higher in my rankings, Mitchell is a really good player at a position of need. This is a good pick for GM Howie Roseman.

2024 NFL Draft: Rome Odunze, Brock Bowers among Day 1’s top value picks – NFL.com
After securing two of the five Day 1 value picks in the 2023 draft, Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith , the Eagles landed the top defender in this year’s class, according to the NGS overall draft score (90). In fact, Mitchell is the only defender in this year’s group to earn a score above 85. Mitchell is the first defensive back that Howie Roseman, Philadelphia’s longtime GM, has selected in the first round. Traditionally, the Eagles have used their premium picks to build through the trenches, but this year, they deviated from this trend to bring in a blue-chip player at a position of need. Mitchell will inject youth and athleticism into the Eagles’ secondary and is projected as a potential successor to Darius Slay , 33, and James Bradberry , 30, down the line. The Toledo product lived around the ball in each of his last two seasons, ranking second in the FBS in passes defended in both 2022 (19) and 2023 (18).

The Quinyon Mitchell vs. James Bradberry competition is officially over – NBCSP
Roseman has never seemed to care about dead cap money because it’s never stopped the Eagles from making the moves they need to make. If the Eagles can trade Carson Wentz and painlessly take on $33.8 million in dead cap in 2021, when their adjusted cap figure was about $189 million, they can certainly take on $15.1 million in dead money with Bradberry with their cap now at around $232 million. The Eagles will talk in the coming months about Mitchell competing for playing time, but there’s no competing. He has to start. You don’t come off a season with the 31st-ranked pass defense in the NFL and select the first cornerback in the draft and then sit him. Darius Slay isn’t quite what he used to be, but he’s still very good. And the combination of Slay and Mitchell gives the Eagles their best chance at getting this pass defense back to respectability. I like Kelee Ringo and I think he’s got a bright future. Eli Ricks did some good things as an undrafted rookie and could become a pretty good slot. Isaiah Rodgers has a lot of experience and is a solid pro. But Mitchell is on a different level. And you don’t draft a corner with 4.33 speed at 22 and then sit him behind a 30-year-old veteran with, what, 5.33 speed.

12 players who make sense for the Eagles in Round 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft – PhillyVoice
Junior Colson, LB, Michigan: Colson led Michigan’s defense with 95 tackles, 30 more than the next-closest Michigan defender. He’s an outstanding run defender. He is also a good athlete, especially for a big linebacker, by today’s standards, at 6’3, 247. He has the height-weight-speed combination to run with tight ends and get them to the ground after the catch.

Report: Cowboys interested in Texas RB Jonathon Brooks but concerned Eagles are, too – PFT
Slater adds that the Cowboys’ biggest concern is the Eagles taking Brooks at No. 53, with the Cowboys picking at No. 56. The Eagles signed veteran Saquon Barkley earlier in the offseason. Brooks, a University of Texas product, tore his ACL in a game against TCU on Nov. 11 after running for 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns in 10 games. The Cowboys, who are talking to Ezekiel Elliott about a reunion, currently have no starting running back on their roster. They signed veteran Royce Freeman and also have Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis and Snoop Conner on the roster at running back.

Cowboys nailed Day 1 of 2024 NFL Draft with their trade and Tyler Guyton pick – Blogging The Boys
The move to pick Guyton in a vacuum is a solid one. Guyton was Dane Brugler’s 27th overall prospect so the Cowboys got value on him in that sense. When you factor in that Dallas also picked up the 73rd overall pick on the way to drafting him Thursday night as a whole was a huge win. It was imperative that that Dallas walked away from the first round with either serious capital on Friday night or a Day 1 starter along the offensive line. They came away with both. The Cowboys have an incredible track record when it comes to drafting offensive linemen, so even though Guyton is regarded as a bit raw in the moment, the benefit of the doubt that has been earned in this arena specifically suggests that Dallas just found themselves a quality tackle.

2024 NFL Draft: Giants select Malik Nabers, WR, LSU – Instant analysis – Big Blue View
Nabers will play all over the offense, lining up in the X, Z, and slot and the Giants hope he’ll be a true No. 1 receiver. He’s an incredibly sudden athlete and should fit well in the quick-passing scheme favored by the Giants, giving them an explosive run-after-catch option. Nabers flourished in pre-snap motion as well as in route concepts designed to get him the ball in space. The Giants have plenty of downfield speed in Darius Slayton and Jalin Hyatt, however Nabers should give the Giants the kind of versatile home-run threat they lost when Saquon Barkley departed in free agency.

Washington Commanders Select Jayden Daniels – Tyler’s Take – Hogs Haven
I like this pick a lot. When I first started my quarterback evaluations back in December, I had Daniels below Drake Maye. Some of my early concerns were his size (he played his final season below 205 pounds), his propensity to put his body out there and take some viscous hits, and arm-strength. As I went back and dissected his film even more, he began to grow on me – although I still had him behind Maye in January. Reading about his interviews with teams and watching his Pro Day (he came in at 210 pounds and showed really good arm strength) helped pull him even with Drake over these final two months. What really sold me on him was when I began to read more about how he dedicated his body and mind during the 2023 offseason to really improve his game. That hard work he put in was something I just couldn’t ignore. I understand he had the best receiving corps in the country and a collectively great offensive line, but we can’t dismiss the improvement he made in the last two seasons – and much of that was on him as a player. I am very excited for what he can bring to this team and hope we have found our new face-of-the-franchise for the next decade-plus.
