The Finals Getting New ‘One Life’ Game Mode

on

Embark Studios has revealed a new game mode coming to The Finals called Terminal Attack. This is one of the few new modes added to the popular free-to-play arena shooter since it was shadowdropped by Embark in December 2023. In Terminal Attack, players are charged with either attacking or defending a terminal, but there is no healing or revive mechanics in the mode, and players are given just one life per round.

Since it was suddenly released by Embark Studios, The Finals has remained relatively consistent, even if the player count is dwindling. Many players bought into the hype early on, but teething problems and concerns regarding rampant cheating marred the game’s reputation far too soon.

In Terminal Attack, there’s one defending team and one attacking team. The attacking team must carry a ‘Decryption Key’ to a predetermined location and complete a data transfer. The defending team, on the other hand, must simply defend the terminal from the onslaught. It’s a five-vs-five game mode, which aligns it with Power Shift, previously the most recent mode added to The Finals. It’ll land in The Finals on May 2nd, emerging as a key part of the Season Two roadmap.

It’s not known what’s in store for The Finals. There were widespread expectations that it’d become a solid esports title, but that hasn’t materialised yet. Despite being played in virtual arenas boasting AI-driven commentators, The Finals hasn’t secured a spot in the wider esports industry. It’s perfect for a competitive tournament or two, but Embark Studios doesn’t seem to be in a rush to generate anything there.

The Finals hasn’t dropped off entirely, but the player count has plummeted since launching in December. If we use Steam as a representative example, we can see that from 242,619 users at launch, the game now sits on around 10,000 peak active players. That’s a decrease of around 96%, but that’s not uncommon for a situation like this. It’s the natural lifecycle that most games follow.
