Scheffler dreams of emulating Tiger Woods

on

Francesco Molinari is set to make his return to the PGA Tour as he competes in the Corales Puntacana Championship from tomorrow until Sunday, April 21st. In Punta Cana, the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic, the Italian golfer will strive for a prestigious result in an event offering a total purse of $4,000,000, with $720,000 going to the winner. At the Puntacana Resort & Club’s Corales Golf Course, among the favorites for the title is Nicolai Hojgaard. The Danish golfer, winner of the 2021 Italian Open at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, where he also represented Team Europe in the 2023 Ryder Cup, is coming off a 16th-place finish at Augusta in the 88th edition of the Masters, where he briefly held the lead during the third round. The 23-year-old from Billund, who was the runner-up in last year’s Corales Puntacana Championship, aims to celebrate his first career title on the American male professional golf circuit. However, Matt Wallace will be absent. The Englishman edged out Hojgaard by one stroke in 2023.

Scottie Scheffler, schedule

American golfers Billy Horschel and Daniel Berger are among the most anticipated stars of the competition, now in its ninth edition and included in the PGA Tour calendar since 2018.

Nine of the top hundred players in the world rankings and Major champions will be in contention, with Molinari joined by Jason Dufner and Jimmy Walker.

The excitement of the top American circuit is doubled this week. At the same time, the RBC Heritage tournament will take place on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, also part of the PGA Tour. Fifty-four out of the eighty-nine competitors who participated in the Masters last week will also compete. Surprisingly, Scottie Scheffler will be among them. The world number one, who donned the “green jacket” for the second time, will once again be the man to beat. In the last four events, he has won three, finishing second at the Houston Open. Now, the American, who may decide to withdraw from the tournament if his wife Meredith goes into labor with their first child, dreams of emulating Tiger Woods, the last player to win a PGA Tour event immediately after claiming a Major. But there are many world-class golfers in the field, from Swedish Ludvig Aberg, who finished second at The Masters, to Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, ranked number two in the world. Among the champions in contention are also Patrick Cantlay, Matt Fitzpatrick (the defending champion), Tommy Fleetwood, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth (winner in 2022 and runner-up in 2023), Justin Thomas, and Will Zalatoris. At the Harbour Town Golf Links, competitors will vie for a total prize purse of $20,000,000, with $3,600,000 going to the winner.
