Rory McIlroy: “I will be on PGA until the end”

on

In today’s uncertain times, a steadfast stance like the one taken by the world number two is anything but guaranteed. Rory, with four Majors under his belt, made his position known as soon as he set foot on the practice grounds at Harbour Town Golf Links, home to the RBC Heritage, his first tournament following the Masters. Just as the credits rolled at Augusta National (where McIlroy’s performance was less than stellar), a sensational piece of news reverberated from across the globe. Following reports from two different sources, the London financial daily City A.M. declared Rory’s imminent move to Greg Norman’s camp a done deal. Such a possibility almost overshadowed Jon Rahm’s signing six months prior.

Rory McIlroy, news

The figure, naturally, was staggering. According to the City paper, the Saudis dangled $850 million in front of him, plus a 2% stake in future LIV earnings. Let’s be frank: that’s roughly €800 million. A sum that defies all logic. A deluge of petrodollars compared to Rory’s career winnings of $81,704,063 since he first swung a club on the PGA Tour.

As the news ricocheted from one platform to another, gaining momentum, even McIlroy’s recent statements lent credence to such a scenario, transitioning from staunch opposition to cautious consideration. Then, the man himself intervened, putting an end to the entire saga.

“Frankly, I don’t know where these rumors started,” he told Todd Lewis. “I’ve never been offered anything by LIV, and I’ve never considered playing on the LIV.”

He continued, “I don’t understand where this news came from. I think I’ve made it clear over the last two years that this isn’t for me. I don’t judge those who have chosen to play over there; everyone is free to choose what’s best for them. I know many of us have had offers, I know colleagues who have been in talks with LIV Golf. But my future is here, here on the PGA Tour.”
