Revisiting Armageddon Mortal Kombat 7

on

Mortal Kombat is a long series, there are tons of games in the series that have been released. Some are worth revisiting and playing long after their original life is over though. Armageddon Mortal Kombat is a version of the game that’s pretty fondly remembered by some. It was quite the leap forward.

Released in 2006, Armageddon was the seventh Mortal Kombat game. We’ve come a long way from there to the current MK 1 players’ experience. While the title is nearly two decades old though, it does hold up remarkably well. In some ways, it’s a title that really pushed things ahead for the title. Is it still worth revisiting today and what does Armageddon Mortal Kombat have to offer?

Armageddon Mortal Kombat

Armageddon Mortal Kombat was the seventh installment in the series, with tons of new features. One major addition was air combos. These have long been a feature of Marvel fighting games like Marvel V Capcom. Another is being able to set custom fatalities. These have always been a flashy part of the game, it was fun to get a bit of control over these inputs too.

There were a decent number of game modes available in Armageddon Mortal Kombat. From bigger solo content like Konquest, a weird race mode Motor Kombat, through to some early online play for the franchise. There was even an expansive character creator. Although, not quite on the level of modern ones in today’s best fighting games. Mortal Kombat Armageddon added a lot to the franchise, but how does it hold up now?

Is Armageddon Worth Replaying in 2024?

Most fighting games have a shelf life. Armageddon Mortal Kombat was the mainline game for a while, but now we’re up to 11 what’s the value in heading back? Some older fighting games live on for quite a long time. They still get tournaments today, long after release. Armageddon isn’t really a game that lived forever though, it’s largely not being played by a wide group anymore. However, there are still plenty of reasons to head back.

One of the most fun things about revisiting Armageddon today is the character pool. Modern titles like the MK 11-character list are huge, but MK 7 here is pretty wide too. In total, there are 62 here! It’s the most expansive list we’ve ever had in the franchise. Their play styles have less variety than modern fighters, but the sheer number is crazy. If you pick the game up for Wii that’s even bigger at 63, with a N64-exclusive MK fighter showing up.

Armageddon is still fun to check in with to see where Mortal Kombat started to grow. With so many fighters and gameplay built from older titles, you get a good sense of how older entries in the series played. It might not be the most famous or best fighting game of all time in the series but there’s plenty to like here. It’s a great game to try back out in 2024.
