Penix went to the Atlanta Falcons at No. 8 overall.

The first surprise of the 2024 NFL Draft was the Atlanta Falcons drafting former Washington Huskies star quarterback Michael Penix Jr with the No. 8 overall pick. Penix’s stock rose considerably in recent weeks to the point where there was confidence that he’d be taken in the first round, but not necessarily that high.

Atlanta signed Kirk Cousins (off an Achilles tear, mind you!) to a four-year contract worth up to $180 million, including $100 million guaranteed. The Falcons nevertheless seem to have his successor.

Penix’s ties to Seahawks offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb made him a possible fit for Seattle. Evidently, Seattle was among three teams vying to move up the draft order to take him. This is according to longtime NFL insider and former NFL Network reporter James Palmer.

The New Orleans Saints and Las Vegas Raiders ultimately did not budge from their slots and drafted Taliese Fuaga and Brock Bowers, respectively. Seattle took defensive tackle Byron Murphy II.

Given the lack of draft capital this year, this presumably would’ve involved (at the very least) sacrificing picks in 2025. The only Seahawks player who’d possibly be seen as the type of high-end asset used to move up in the draft would be DK Metcalf, and while there have been some whispers and rumors, he’s still here.

So there you have it. If the report is to be believed, the Seahawks eyed the Huskies legend, but the attempt was unsuccessful.
