Taulia Tagovailoa was most recently quarterback at Maryland.

Individual rookie minicamp invites normally aren’t worth a story in itself, but this might be an exception.

Taulia Tagovailoa, quarterback and younger brother of Miami Dolphins starting QB Tua Tagovailoa, has been invited to join Seattle’s rookie minicamp. Since this is an invite and not a UDFA signing, he won’t count against the roster total.

Taulia began his collegiate playing days at Alabama, but after Tua left for the NFL, he transferred to the University of Maryland. He amassed a 23-18 record as a four-year starter, throwing for over 11,000 yards and 77 touchdowns to 37 interceptions. Tagovailoa is the all-time leader in Big Ten passing yards and holds countless school records for the Terrapins.

Why was he not drafted or even given a UDFA call-up? Well beyond being just 5’10 and 185, here’s the scouting report summary from Dane Brugler:

Though undersized, he plays with outstanding toughness and better arm strength than expected to push the ball downfield. However, he gets locked on preferred reads and is late to read man/zone, forcing errant throws into coverage. Overall, Taulia Tagovailoa is a confident, mobile passer who shines in the RPO game, but his lack of top-tier physical traits will make it tough for him to overcome inconsistent decision-making in the NFL.

It’s a minicamp invite so don’t expect a whole lot, but John Schneider did say the Seahawks were looking into adding a couple of quarterbacks after the draft. San Jose State’s Chevon Cordeiro was signed as a UDFA, so perhaps Taulia will have his shot to turn rookie minicamp into a roster spot in training camp.
