Earlier this week, it was reported that Dominik Mysterio wearing a sling on the April 22 episode of WWE Raw and bowing out of his scheduled tag match was not a work and that The Judgment Day bad boy was legitimately hurt.

It wasn’t known at the time what type of injury Mysterio was dealing with, but this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter says it’s a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. The procedure to repair a UCL is known as Tommy John surgery, named for the baseball pitcher who first underwent the operation in 1974. It replaces the UCL with a ligament from another part of the body.

Athletes like pitchers and football quarterbacks who will use their surgically-repaired elbows for throwing typically need a year or more to return from Tommy John surgery, but the recovery time is typically less for others. The Observer also reports that WWE’s “plan would be to keep him as a television character while recovering”, at least “as of right now”.

The way WWE used Dom on Monday is probably a signal he’ll remain on our screens at least occasionally while he rehabs from surgery. In addition to his presence during The Judgment Day angles, they teased a moment between him and Liv Morgan, the person who injured Mysterio’s storyline partner Rhea Ripley. Dominik is also listed in the Draft pool for Raw this upcoming Monday, something WWE didn’t do for other injured wrestlers like Ripley or Jimmy Uso.

Stay tuned, and keep a good thought for Dirty Dom’s speedy recovery… while still booing him, of course.
