Rainbow Six Reputation System Still Needs More Work

on

Ubisoft has confirmed that the ‘Reputation System’ in development for Rainbow Six Siege still isn’t working as intended. First deployed as a beta at the start of 2023, the Reputation System is designed to counter toxic behaviour in Ubisoft’s flagship multiplayer shooter. However, it hasn’t ever worked as expected, with some players being labelled incorrectly, impacting their experience and making them ‘look bad’.

It has been confirmed that the feature will remain in beta for the foreseeable future as the Rainbow Six team investigates ongoing issues. Presently, there are concerns that the system is flagging players more than expected, resulting in negative feedback being collected by automated systems that are categorising players in the wrong way. This effectively could make a neutral or positive player look negative or disruptive when they’re playing just fine.

Rainbow Six Siege’s Reputation System is a good idea in practice. It studies in-game communications and behaviour and looks for anything disruptive, abusive, aggressive, or unwanted. It then applies an attribute to a player’s profile that marks them in a particular category. There are three ‘tiers’ to the Reputation System, and Ubisoft has stressed that, in an ideal world, most players will fit in the middle tier, which is ‘Neutral’:

Negative

  • Dishonorable
  • Disruptive

Neutral

  • Respectable

Positive

  • Esteemed
  • Exemplary

For the longest time, the Rainbow Six Siege community has suffered from toxicity. There are millions of people playing Rainbow Six Siege, and unfortunately, many of them use the anonymity of the internet to abuse others in their game. If there’s one core issue that plagues the game, it’s the fact that newcomers are often not welcomed to the title, with more experienced players looking down on them and ruining their first impressions of the game.

All of these elements are dramatically important now that Rainbow Six Siege is becoming more popular than ever.

That’s the kind of thing that the Reputation System is designed to counter – but after more than a year in beta, it’s still not working properly. When it’s fully deployed as a permanent feature, players will start to see the impact of their categorisation. For instance, negative players will have their progression and matchmaking abilities restricted. Conversely, positive players will have XP boosts and will unlock special ‘exclusive items’ for setting the right example.

Again, that’s dependent on Ubisoft getting the formula right and releasing a full feature that works as intended.
