NFL analyst issues impassioned defense of Giants’ coach Brian Daboll

Ty Dunne also sees the Drake Maye-Josh Allen comparison

An NFL analyst familiar with Brian Daboll’s work with the Buffalo Bills issued an impassioned defense of the New York Giants head coach during an appearance Tuesday on the Big Blue View YouTube channel.

Ty Dunne of the outstanding subscription-based website GoLongTD.com, pushed back on an assertion by former NFL quarterback Kurt Benkert that the Giants would not be a good landing spot for a rookie quarterback in need of development, like Drake Maye of North Carolina.

“I’m not sure what this justification for that was, having not seen it. If the argument is weaponry, okay, they they could use a receiver, which makes this whole conversation that much more interesting that they need somebody outside,” Dunne said. “But in terms of coaching and scheme I don’t know. Hell, maybe I’m still drunk off that Daboll Kool-Aid here in Buffalo.

“I don’t get that at all. I honestly feel like if you can get an athletic, physical talent, somebody that’s got some raw stuff to them, this is a great spot.”

Dunne told the story of Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre telling him how much he had enjoyed working with Daboll during the 2008 season, when Daboll was New York Jets quarterbacks coach.

“He [Favre] was breaking down once on our show all the different ways Daboll made life simpler for him terminology-wise. He can make complicated things very digestible,” Dunne said. “But beyond all of that it’s the person.

“When he’s all over Tyrod [Taylor] at halftime I think people who don’t have a clue are irate over that like, oh my God, I can’t believe Brian Daboll would show up his quarterback on national TV. That’s awful.

“But, gosh, every player in Buffalo that I’ve talked to, they love the guy. He developed such real relationships with players that he can do that, he’s got a license to do that, they’re okay with him getting on them because he’s going to love you up as well, he’s going to be real, he’s going to be authentic — this isn’t a robot, this isn’t somebody reading a manual on how to be a head coach and trying to mechanically do what he thinks you’re supposed to do.

“He’s himself, so I would want to play for a coach like that and a quarterback teacher like that and the Giants are in good hands with both of these guys [Daboll and GM Joe Schoen] running the show.”

Like many other NFL-watchers, Dunne can’t help but see the parallels between Maye and Josh Allen when he thinks about which quarterback the Giants might prefer in the 2024 NFL Draft.

“I live in Western New York and had a chance to really see everything Brian Daboll did with Josh Allen,” Dunne said. “I see Drake Maye and I see Josh Allen and Justin Herbert and I think Dabs would love to get his hands on him if he could.

“Takes two to tango, we’ll see if a trade’s even possible. I do think they’re going to at least try to move up to take Drake Maye, and that’s a gut feeling and kind of reading and putting this jigsaw puzzle together as much as anything.”
