After taking a beating (and losing some hair) to Christian Cage and The Patriarchy last week, AEW World champion Swerve Strickland vowed to bring back-up to his face-to-face with his Double or Nothing challenger on the May 8 Dynamite.
During a war of words where Cage said that this week he was taking Strickland’s gold teeth, the champ revealed that he’d brought his old Mogul Embassy squad to watch his back. Swerve made an actually good reference to the Kendrick Lamar/Drake beef (specifically, “this won’t be the first time a dude from the West Coast had to beat down a fake father from Toronto”)…

… but then Christian’s plan was revealed. Brian Cage and Gates of Agony were with him and not the Mogul. The trio destroyed the champ, punctuating the attack by putting Strickland through the announce desk.

This was something that needed to be tied off from Strickland’s time as a heel, and while somewhat obvious this was as good a way to do it as any other. It’s worth noting that Prince Nana was nowhere to be found in all of this, so there still could be some tension about which side of the Mogul Embassy split he’s on.
For his part, Christian marched backstage and shared a moment with EVPs Matthew & Nicholas Jackson, telling them he thinks this was the start of what will be a very fruitful working relationship.
