MLW’s tag team title scene in in flux after the championship was vacated. New titleholders are coming quickly to be crowned at the Azteca Lucha event on May 11 in Chicago, IL.

Tom Lawlor and Davey Boy Smith Jr. were stripped of the gold. The Contra Unit declared war on the World Titan Federation. Mads Krugger led the attack backstage at War Chamber 2. Lawlor, Smith, and Richard Holliday were all victims to violence.

MLW updated the situation, “Lawlor was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries sustained during the altercation.” As a result, WTF will be unable to defend the tag titles, “within the contractually obligated window.” The MLW championship committee convened and decided to vacate the belts. The title reign for Lawlor and Smith ends at 53 days.

MLW also announced, “a sudden death World Tag Team Championship bout,” for Azteca Lucha. Matthew Justice & 1 Called Manders of the Second Gear Crew will wrestle Satoshi Kojima & Okumura of CozyMAX to become the new champs.

This is an interesting choice in matchmaking. SGC previously held the tag titles before dropping them to WTF. Kojima is the current world heavyweight champion in MLW. On top of that, all four men were partners in the War Chamber match, so there will be a bond of respect.
