Mekhi Becton, Eagles reportedly agree to one-year contract

New York Jets v New England Patriots

The Eagles weren’t able to draft a tackle this year, so they went and signed one who has NFL experience.

The Eagles didn’t end up drafting an offensive tackle, opting instead to stick to their board and get defensive players early, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t still looking for one. A day after the end of the 2024 NFL Draft, Howie Roseman decided to sign a former first-round pick (No. 11 overall) in Mekhi Becton.

Becton will sign a one-year deal worth up to $5.5 million, all pending a physical. He will give the Eagles some depth as a swing tackle behind starters Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson.

Becton missed all but one game for the Jets in 2021 and 2022 due to knee surgeries, and then suffered a high ankle sprain in November 2023 — which explains the emphasis on passing a physical. Still, he’s only 25 years old and does have NFL experience. Roseman mentioned over the weekend that they opted to sign young guys who had tape, rather than loading up on UDFAs, so this would be another such signing.

Johnson is expected to play for several more years, and the team just extended Mailata (again) so this move will give the team depth at a position with starters in place. Most of the OL depth currently on the roster are interior guys, and Jack Driscoll, who played backup tackle last year, signed with the Dolphins this off-season.
