Marketa Vondrousova explains why she doesn’t want to think she can win another Slam

Marketa Vondrousova says she does not want to think that she can win another Grand Slam because that would be “just too much pressure for me.” Vondrousova, 24, once said she would never win a Grand Slam. But this summer, Vondrousova became a Grand Slam champion after putting an outstanding run at Wimbledon. Now, Vondrousova is the ninth-seeded player at the US Open and is regarded as someone who could make a really deep run and potentially win the title. But Vondrousova’s mindset hasn’t changed as the Czech still likes to keep her expectations very low. 

Vondrousova on why she doesn’t want to think she can win another Slam 

“Yeah, at least I have one, so it’s good. Yeah, for me, I never, like, want to think I can win another. I feel like it’s just too much pressure for me if I think that, if I start think about it before tournament, or if I’m in the tournament. Yeah, I just learned to keep the pressure off, like tell myself it’s just a tennis match, it’s nothing else. I feel like that really helps me when I’m maybe down in my match or something. I’m just thinking it’s just a tennis match, it’s nothing else. I don’t know if it’s a good thing or no, but it really helps me. I feel like for me it’s a good sign,” Vondrousova said. Now that Vondrousova is a Grand Slam champion, there is more attention and focus on the 24-year-old. “I mean, definitely more media (smiling). Yeah, I mean, I just want to stay focused on practice and everything around. Yeah, I get bigger courts now, so that’s a nice change. Yeah, I feel like you just have to stay in your head and stay focused. It’s definitely more pressure and more people are talking about you. Yeah, I just want to enjoy the matches and we’ll see what’s going to happen,” Vondrousova said. In the US Open first round, Vondrousova plays against a qualifier.
