Czech tennis star Marketa Vondrousova has revealed to a Czech news outlet that she and her husband Stepan Simek have agreed to put an end to their marriage.
Vondrousova, 24, and 26-year-old Simek got engaged in 2021 and a year later they tied the knot. But now, Vondrousova and Simek have decided to go their separate ways.
Simek, a former junior tennis player who wasn’t able to accomplish his tennis dreams due to injuries, also had his five minutes of fame during Vondrousova’s 2023 Wimbledon run. In the latter stages of Wimbledon, Simek got known after Vondrousova revealed that her husband actually had to stay home to take care of their cat named Frankie.
“Our marriage with Stepan ended a few weeks ago, we broke up. He moved out of with the cat,” Vondrousova told Blesk.
“It just didn’t work out for us. It wasn’t what we both imagined, so we agreed not to be together anymore. Now we are formally resolving the divorce, but we have agreed on everything.”

Vondrousova credited Simek for one of the biggest wins of her career
Before beating Ons Jabeur in the Wimbledon final for her first Grand Slam title, Vondrousova was inches away from exiting The Championships against Jessica Pegula. Versus Pegula, Vondrousova was down by a double break in the third set and losing 1-4 before going on to win the next five games to overturn the deficit and beat the America.
Later, Vondrousova revealed that during a rain delay that happened in the third set when she was down, it was her husband who made her believe she could get back and win.
“I actually didn’t see my coach,” Vondrousova revealed after the match.
“I was alone in the waiting room. I chatted a bit with my husband. We talked on the phone. He just said: ‘Try to fight, you are playing good, you are playing a great match.’ That was it. I think the break helped actually. It was good.”

For the Wimbledon final against Jabeur, Simek flew from the Czech Republic and cheered for now his ex-wife. After Vondrousova won the title, Simek was spotted looking very emotionally in the box.
